From the banks of the Nile River to the ancient streets of the city, Cairo is a haven for a wide variety of wildlife, some of which have found themselves in the midst of power struggles and dictatorships throughout history. One of the most iconic animals associated with Egypt is the majestic lion, a symbol of power and strength that has been used by many rulers and dictators to project an aura of authority. In ancient times, lions were kept in royal menageries and used as symbols of the pharaoh's power and divine authority. Today, while lions are not native to Egypt, they can still be found in zoos and private collections throughout the country. Another animal that has a storied history in Cairo is the falcon, a symbol of the Egyptian god Horus, who was often depicted with the head of a falcon. Falcons have been revered in Egypt for thousands of years and were used in hunting expeditions by pharaohs and nobles. Today, falconry is still practiced in Egypt, and these magnificent birds can be seen soaring above the cityscape. In addition to these majestic creatures, Cairo is also home to a wide variety of more humble animals, such as cats and dogs, that roam the streets and alleyways of the city. Cats, in particular, have a special place in Egyptian culture and are often seen as symbols of good luck and protection. The famous Egyptian Mau breed of cat is believed to be descended from the sacred cats of ancient Egypt.
